Evil scientist, how to
http://cjsd.blogspot.com/2008/02/ten-simple-rules-for-graduate-students.html
There is nothing worse than trapping your nemesis, cackling maniacally, and pressing a big red button, only to have nothing happen. Test your evil science constantly. Railroad yards, communes, and office cubicles provide endless sources of human subjects who won’t be missed and will probably go without a fight.

"Involved in a prostitution ring"
Dammit, Spitzer hired a prostitute. This is not the same thing as being involved in a prostitution ring.

When the news came out with that pseudo-euphemism, I thought Spitzer was running a prostitution ring in his copious spare time, though I suppose investing in one would have been more plausible.

In any case, the story is considerably less interesting, though the hypocrisy and political consequences are extreme.

Related language complaint: I wish English had one word for advocating a rule you don't obey and another for enforcing a rule you're not obeying.

Addendum: [info]madfilkentist recommends "hypercracy" (above the law) for enforcing rules you don't obey. Pass it on.

Aside from enforcement, there's the shame thing. If you advocate a rule with a tone of "almost everybody lives by this rule, and those who don't are vile" while not obeying the rule, that's problematic enough to deserve some harassment.

New BMI project, photograph at Lunacon
First, there was The BMI project-- a series of photographs of women with their BMIs, so that you could see what those numbers really mean.

Now, there's a new, more public BMI project-- a national magazine is calling for photographs of healthy people who are overweight or obese, with their height, weight, BMI, and waist/hip ratio.

In re "healthy":
3) You’re the best judge of how healthy you are. If you think you’re healthy, and yet you’re in one of the “fat” BMI ranges we’re told is intrinsically unhealthy, then there’s no reason not to send a photo. You may or may not be asked to participate, but they’d like a wide pool of submissions to select from.

Having said that, the purpose of this article is stereotype-busting — so yes, if you’re an athlete or your doctor is wetting her pants over your blood pressure reading, that will probably make them more likely to take an interest in you. But they’re not asking for perfection here — anyone who makes an effort to practice HAES, feels pretty good, and doesn’t appear to be at death’s door in photos should go ahead and submit a pic, if you’re interested.

HAES is Health At Every Size-- the goal is to be as healthy as possible without trying to adjust your size or proportions.

The deadline is March 19.

I'd like to get in on this-- is there someone with a digital camera who'd be willing to take pictures of me at Lunacon?
