OY! LOL!
Isn't perceptual memory wonderful? I don't think your average Yank would do as well at naming anything in Australia but Sydney & Melbourne.

Tee-hee. I once tried the same thing myself, with considerably better results. Then I tried the counties of the UK, and struggled quite a bit. (The fact the government's been repeatedly changing the latter since 1973, and there's also different types of counties now with different borders doesn't help.)

I used to work at a TEFL school, and had one overseas leader/teacher telling me quite seriously how bothered she was that she still hadn't learned all the English counties and how did we manage. I simply said "we don't, it only really matters if you live there" and her jaw dropped—having now lived in6 of them and visited most of the others... I still don't know them all, neither do I care.

Except when there's a by election there, when I'll magically learn everything there is to know within a few days.

Mind you, I once got got Montreal and Ottawa mixed up and heard a lot of aggravation from the Canadians ... then September 11 happened and most of the same Canadians were all "Oh are you all right?" and I explained patiently that Princeton is in New Jersey, not New York, and about an hour and a half by train from Manhattan ...

The consensus from the Facebook thread about this was that it's pretty much entirely accurate. The Canadian guy who posted said he could have also recognised Idaho because it was on potato packaging, but the rest of us (Australians and Spaniards) agreed with this guy's level of knowledge. (if anything, he might have done better than me, despite the fact that I've been in the States now for over 2 years..)

If you just know how many there are, you're doing better than our President, who said on more than one occasion that he had "campaigned in 57 states".

If he'd just said it once I'd be willing to grant that perhaps he had a mild concussion from being hit in the head with a ketchup bottle.

Stopping to think about it, I now realise a lot of my knowledge of the layout of US states comes from having read The Long Death: The Last Days of the Plains Indian, in which I could follow how the states came about: how the original Louisiana Territory was divided into successively smaller portions, and where the names came from. This explains why I could now state which two states are Oregon and Washington but not which is which: originally they were both (part of) the Oregon Country, for instance.

very cute!

I got a quick lesson in Australian geography when I was in Timor-Leste, but I'm not sure how much of it stuck....

Still, I think I could at least *name* all the Australian states (... I think).
