Forever?
I don't have much of an opinion about Scottish independence. I'm pulled between a feeling that it's good for people to get out from under authority and a suspicion that it's not that simple.

However, there's a relatively objective question available. David Cameron said " But if you leave the UK, – that will be forever.”

Suppose that Scotland leaves, and suppose that either an independent Scotland isn't so great or (less likely imho) the remaining UK becomes so wonderful that people are begging to join it.

How hard would it be for Scotland to come back?

It would take an act of Parliament . . . which is what it's going to take for them to leave as I understand it. They could wind up as the Liz and Dick of nations.

We'd be looking for more of a Spartan-Helot relationship in that case.

Seriously, though, it's an interesting question. I suspect that if Scotland was so not-great that taking it on would be a liability, the UK would need some persuading. Much more persuading, say, than West Germany needed to take on the DDR in the euphoria of the collapse of communism. Although Germany had been a unified state for less time than the United Kingdom, I think there was a far greater sense of Germany being one nation than there is or ever has been between Scotland and England (England being the major player in the UK for this purpose).

There's certainly precedent for Scotland joining with England to make one country, but if I've got my history right, it wasn't the Scots who wanted it last time.

I think the Scottish leaders were willing enough to go along with it last time, due to their economy divebombing. A bit like the scenario nancylebov envisages here, in fact. The population at large is another matter, but of course no one asked them.

I think Scotland leaving is a terrible idea from an economic standpoint, but perhaps EU membership will help curb the loss and keep Scotland viable. Still, if I were Scottish, I probably wouldn't vote "yes". But I guess one has to be Scottish to truly understand how it feels.
