Not quite random Talmud question
Are Jews permitted to sell idols? What about making idols? Is there a difference between making/selling idols for non-Jews as distinct from Jews who are likely to worship the idols?

The short answer is "no", for a bunch of reasons.

Aiding and abetting idolatry is not permitted.

No, Jews aren't supposed to make or sell idols to anybody, Jew or non-Jew. That applies to things that are customarily, explicitly, worshipped as idols. If you sell a lamp to somebody who takes it home and starts worshipping it? You sold a lamp, not an idol.

(Have you heard of any idolatrous use of buttons?)

Wouldn't they fall under the "graven images" prohibition?

Here's a Talmudic link that discusses the issues: Grave Issues about Graven Images: the short answer appears to be "absolutely not."

A Jewish friend helped me make a mask/icon of one of my gods a few years ago, and thought that the whole process was entirely awesome (because of my sculpting skills, mostly). And he was bouncing around going, "I have got to tell my dad about this!" for a bit.

Then he stopped.

Then he said, "On second thought, I probably shouldn't tell my father I spent the day helping a pagan make an idol..."

(Especially as his father's a rabbi.)
