Rationality as a martial art

Over at Less Wrong, there's a discussion of to what extent rationality can best be supported by institutions vs. whether it's just something you've got to do for yourself.

And I'm not sure of the answer (though I suspect that you can't build institutions which are more rational than the people in them), but I got sidetracked into the question of non-institutional group support for rationality. In particular, I wonder how much rationality is learned by example-- by being around people who remember to pay attention to what they know, even when it could be easy to go with habit, emotion, or desire.
