Alternatives to AVG?|
I've got an irrational hatred of having the Yahoo search engine come up as a default, and AVG doesn't seem to offer Google.
Addendum: I've installed Avast.
AVG forces a change to your browser that you can't change???
It seems that "can't" is a relative term.

You can disable the AVG add-on.
As far as I can, there was no way to get new tabs to come up blank. Instead, they were slimed all over with yahoo.
And AVG kept putting its toolbar back every time I rebooted.
What's more, as soon as I upgraded AVG (required by Dec. 1), some of my pages were either slow-loading, wouldn't finish loading (the circling animation in the tab wouldn't stop even if the page was loaded), or wouldn't load at all. Oddly, Avast was in the last category. Fortunately, inquisitiveravn
was able to get the install page on her thumb drive and pass it to me.Edited at 2009-11-19 01:01 pm (UTC)
There is actually an option when you install AVG to turn off all the Yahoo stuff. It's somewhere deep in 'custom install', and I didn't find it until the fourth or fifth time I was installing it on a computer at work.

Yahoo vs. Google
Curious. I prefer the Yahoo search engine. Google really irritates me. It seems to give me links I don't want in preference to those I do, for reasons I have never understood. I have been using Yahoo almost exclusively for a year or so.
I'm still using AVG, but I agree it's becoming more and more bloated. I never install the toolbar, and after this latest upgrade I turned off the Active Surf-Shield.
