That was brilliant--I do love Mitchell & Webb. Adding to my amusement is the fact that my youngest son actually has a Liverpool jersey, courtesy of my in-laws. I wonder if they've seen the skit.

cf. how we won the war, killed the Messiah, abolished slavery, killed the Aztecs, brought civilisation to the world, defeated communism, and sacrificed our enemies on the sun pyramid.

I wonder which kinds of social identification Mitchell and Webb approve. Here they've identified the line of discourse - how far could they push it?

I realized a few years back that this exact kind of social identification goes on in the realm of politics. Especially the decision to go to war -- the identification American war hawks feel with the US military is almost exactly the same as that sports fans feel towards their team.
