We all dodged a bullet
I was worried that someone else would do a public burning of Korans. Either no one else thought it was a good idea in the first place, or the amount of public pressure against that pastor worked.

There are better things to worry about than the actions of cranks.

Fred Phelps did burn Qur'ans. You're just not seeing breathless hour-by-hour coverage of it. I speculate that this is for three reasons:

1) "Fred Phelps does something hateful" is not news by anybody's standards; he used up his 15 minutes of fame on soldiers' funerals.

2) Admiral Mullen and General Petraus convinced a lot of reporters that if they covered Qur'an burnings, that made them accessories to the murder of American soldiers.

3) And maybe, just maybe, Rachel Maddow's argument that the only reason we heard about this in the first place is that the story was being promoted by Gingrich and others within the Republican party who really, really want an all-out war between the US and Islamic states in the middle east (all of them), that they were promoting this story and the Park51 community center story at this particular time out of anger over US "withdrawal" from Iraq, was persuasive to reporters who felt shamed that they'd been so thoroughly played.

Thanks for the information. Phelps sounds like an example of "Oft evil will will evil mar".

Your info sounds like the Churchill quote that Americans will do the right thing after all alternatives have been exhausted.

Also, I wonder how to balance an obligation to call out bad behavior by people who are more or less in your own group with not just giving the bad behavior publicity.

I knew a Republican conspiracy theory had to show up on this topic sooner or later.

Apparently Phelps isn't the only one who burned a Koran-- lets hope video of it doesn't go viral.

My hypothesis is that Obama worked his contacts in the evangelical community until he found someone that Reverend Whatsizname actually respected.
