Does capitalism need to expand?

That may seem like a naive question, but it's never been obvious to me that a capitalist/free market economy couldn't settle down to a steady state if people had enough of what they wanted.

If tastes remain stable, business might become pretty boring, with just occasional improvements in production. People would have to take their will to power somewhere else, but so what?

Tangentially, do people develop some immunity to advertising as they get older? Could they be expected to do so to a greater extent if there were anti-aging tech?
