Human-computer overlap
Sorry no cite, but I saw a quote somewhere that masters come to resemble their slaves because masters need to be able to communicate with slaves.

Here's a rather giddy essay about humans being influenced by computers, and I'm using it as an excuse to share some links.

There's a slew of links about the real-world use of pixels and voxels for the fun of it. I'm a bit shocked that it's taken so long for there to be much of that.

tele-present water from david bowen on Vimeo.

I think this is unspeakably cool. I bet that if there was a small version (suitable for living rooms), people would buy it.

Then the essay spreads out a bit-- I can't honestly say that this would work as camouflage, but I want to see the Halloween costumes, and the horror movie. It's like a cheerful version of Leiber's "Smoke Ghost".

The essay says that some spam sounds like the computers are trying to communicate back-- for example: “sorry, I’m telling you, things are getting out of hand, or maybe I’m discovering that things were never in my hands. Help me. I find sites on this topic, replica firearms for sale. I found only this– replica Rolex for sale. Replica, Rome is the court to many being areas. Replica, twelve wrote environment years along the college change principle exploration. Waiting for reply. Sad face, Jerusha from Senegal.”

There's a comment at the bottom which are almost certainly spam, but damned if they don't sound like a human effort to imitate the computer trying to communicate.... or maybe they really are the computers talking to us.

"It is appropriate time to make a few plans for the longer term and it is time to be happy. I have learn this submit and if I could I wish to suggest you some fascinating issues or advice. Maybe you can write subsequent articles relating to this article. I want to learn even more things about it!"

You know Charlie Stross's theory that true, self-aware AI is going to come accidentally from the war between the spammers and the anti-spammers. As the spam programs get better at circumventing spam filters, and the spam filters get better at catching the spam, both sets of programs are going to have to create text that is more and more human, more and more like there is an actual conscious mind behind them, and they will eventually get to the point where they will actually develop conscious minds.

... I just spoiled the plot of RULE 34. Sorry.

I think it's more likely to come from video game creators trying to make better villians, sort of like how LaForge on "Star Trek" created Moriety on the holodeck to have a worthy opponent for Data.

James Baldwin argued that the oppressed had to understand their oppressor better than the reserve because the oppressed had to survive their oppressor, while the oppressor suppressed his own understanding to justify the oppression. Of course, his argument was essay length and this is just a summary.

I'd expect the influence to go both ways, but it's probably more surprising that slaves affect masters.
