It accepts the name for nancybuttons.com, but not the password. (I've tried both my new dreamhost password and what I think the old password was for /admin.)

Those don't have an overlap with the password -- the users for admin (user managed), dreamhost (dreamhost managed, account setup password, linked to an email address), and ssh/ftp users (dreamhost managed) are entirely separate even if they share the same name.

Confusing, I know.

I use PUTTY myself. You're on DH - do you have a Shell account?

Go to panel.dreamhost.com, log in, go to Users:Manage users, make sure that the user account you want to use is a "Shell" account. If you need to, use "edit" to change the password to something you'll remember.

There's nothing wrong with Putty, then. That's something about the far side.
